Grand Staircase Escalante-National Monument
The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in Utah encompasses nearly 2 million acres of outstanding desert landscape. I first visited in 1996, the year the monument was created. I haven't spent nearly enough time there but some of my favorite locations are Coyote Gulch, Willow Gulch, Neon Canyon, Harris Wash, Escalante Canyon, Long Canyon, the Calf Creek area and the Wahweap area. Some favorite roads to explore are Hole in the Rock road, Cottonwood Canyon road, Smoky Mountain road, Highway 89 and the incomparable Highway 12 Scenic Byway.
